Age and sun spot removal

Sun spots and age spots are in fact the same skin condition. They are areas of pigmentation on the skin, caused by UV light (daylight / sunlight). The reason that we sometimes call these pigmented areas ‘age spots’ is that they can take years to appear, as the damage occurs, deep within the skin tissues and as the skin regenerates, it brings this damage to the surface. Age spots and sun spots are created when UV light stimulates the melanin (pigment) within the skin. Melanin is activated to protect the skin from damage when UV light is present. However, ironically, the presence of melanin (dark spots, freckles or marks on the skin) means that the skin has already been affected by excessive exposure to the sun. At Bank MediSpa, in Hale, Cheshire, we use LUMINA, laser and IPL technology, by Lynton Lasers, to eradicate pigment within the skin and create a more even-toned skin appearance. What’s more, this can have an anti-ageing effect on the skin, too!

How does age and sun spot removal work?

Specifically chosen wavelengths of light are aimed in to the skin, by the LUMINA device. This light breaks down the pigment within the skin, which is then naturally dispersed by the body. A healing response then occurs, where the skin creates more collagen and elastin, helping to resurface and rejuvenate the skin, over a course of several treatments.

FAQs

Am I suitable for age and sun spot removal?

Before any treatment can be carried out, here at Bank MediSpa, we will ask that you attend a no obligation consultation with Dr A, so that he can assess the condition of your skin, discuss your medical history and ensure that a laser / IPL treatment using the LUMINA device will be both safe and beneficial for your skin concerns. When you are both happy that the procedure will indeed, reduce the pigmentation within your skin safely and effectively, you can then book your course of LUMINA treatment.

When will I see results from my age and sun spot removal treatment?

The results can be gradual as it takes some time for the pigment within the skin to be broken down by the LUMINA technology and naturally eliminated from the body. However, many of our patients claim they notice a difference after just one treatment. It’s important to take in to account that your results will depend on the depth of pigmentation, the size of the pigmented areas and your natural skin colour / type. This will all be discussed in your pre-treatment consultation here at the clinic.

How long do the results last?

The removal of the pigment within your skin is permanent. However, it is vitally important that you do not continue with excessive sun exposure during or after your treatment course, as further pigmentation can and will occur. Using both physical and chemical sunscreen will help to protect your skin not only from hyperpigmentation, but from premature ageing, dehydration and the risk of skin cancer. Dr A, will advise on how to take care of your skin, following your LUMINA treatment course.
