Sun spots and age spots are in fact the same skin condition. They are areas of pigmentation on the skin, caused by UV light (daylight / sunlight). The reason that we sometimes call these pigmented areas ‘age spots’ is that they can take years to appear, as the damage occurs, deep within the skin tissues and as the skin regenerates, it brings this damage to the surface. Age spots and sun spots are created when UV light stimulates the melanin (pigment) within the skin. Melanin is activated to protect the skin from damage when UV light is present. However, ironically, the presence of melanin (dark spots, freckles or marks on the skin) means that the skin has already been affected by excessive exposure to the sun. At Bank MediSpa, in Hale, Cheshire, we use LUMINA, laser and IPL technology, by Lynton Lasers, to eradicate pigment within the skin and create a more even-toned skin appearance. What’s more, this can have an anti-ageing effect on the skin, too!
How does age and sun spot removal work?
Specifically chosen wavelengths of light are aimed in to the skin, by the LUMINA device. This light breaks down the pigment within the skin, which is then naturally dispersed by the body. A healing response then occurs, where the skin creates more collagen and elastin, helping to resurface and rejuvenate the skin, over a course of several treatments.
