Pigmentation issues

Imbalances or irregularities in melanin production can lead to pigmentation issues. Hyperpigmentation occurs when there is an overproduction of melanin, resulting in dark spots, patches, or areas on the skin. This can be triggered by sun exposure, hormonal fluctuations (as seen in conditions like melasma or during pregnancy), inflammation, and certain medications. On the other hand, hypopigmentation arises from a reduction in melanin production, resulting in lighter or white patches on the skin, often seen in conditions like vitiligo.

The impact of pigmentation irregularities on appearance can vary, but they often lead to concerns about skin tone evenness. Hyperpigmentation, such as sunspots or melasma, can make the skin appear uneven and aged. This concern typically affects the areas that are frequently exposed, including: the face, shoulders, chest, forearms and hands. Conversely, hypopigmentation, which can appear anywhere on the body, can create noticeable contrasts in skin colour, potentially affecting one’s self-esteem and confidence.

Treatments

Bank Medispa regularly sees patients who are concerned with hyperpigmentation issues (age spots, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma and sun damaged skin). We always stress the importance of using adequate protection for your skin, applying SPF on a daily basis.

This will help to prevent cellular damage from UV rays and reduce the chance of developing pigmentation concerns in the future. However, if dark patches occur we can use treatments such as: Dermalux LED Light Therapy, Obagi Blue Radiance Peel, The Cool Peel, and IllumiFacial to encourage cellular regeneration and restore the complexion’s even tone.
