Crepey Skin

Crepey skin is a term used to describe skin that has become thin, loose, and wrinkled, resembling the texture of crepe paper. It is characterised by a crinkled or finely wrinkled appearance, often accompanied by a loss of elasticity and firmness.

This condition is more common in areas where the skin is thinner and has fewer oil glands, such as the underarms, inner arms, neck, chest (decolletage), and the area around the eyes.

Several factors contribute to the development of crepey skin. Firstly, natural ageing processes play a significant role. As we age, the production of collagen and elastin fibres, which provide structural support and elasticity to the skin, decreases. This leads to a loss of skin firmness and resilience. Additionally, a decline in the production of natural oils can contribute to dryness and thinning of the skin, further exacerbating the crepey texture.

Environmental factors, such as excessive sun exposure, also contribute to crepey skin. UV radiation damages collagen and elastin fibres, accelerating the ageing process and leading to premature skin sagging and wrinkling. Dehydration and poor nutrition can also contribute to crepey skin, as well-hydrated, well-nourished skin is better equipped to maintain its elasticity.

Furthermore, lifestyle choices like smoking can accelerate the ageing process by hindering blood flow to the skin, leading to reduced oxygen and nutrient supply. Finally, genetic predispositions can influence an individual’s susceptibility to developing crepey skin.

While crepey skin is a natural part of the ageing process, lifestyle modifications like maintaining a balanced diet, staying hydrated, using sunscreen, and adopting a skincare routine that includes moisturising and targeted treatments can help minimise its appearance and promote overall skin health. This can be further supported by a suitable in-clinic treatment, and at Bank Medispa we have a range of options available.

SkinPen microneedling, Profhilo, HarmonyCA, Morpheus8 and Forma are safe and effective treatments designed to improve the quality and condition of the skin, including conditions such as crepey skin.
