Enlarged Pores

Enlarged pores, also known as dilated pores, are visible openings on the skin’s surface that allow hair follicles and oil glands to communicate with the outside environment.

They are more noticeable when they become stretched or dilated, often giving the skin a textured or uneven appearance. Enlarged pores are most commonly found on the face, particularly in the areas with a higher concentration of oil glands, such as the forehead, nose, and cheeks. As well as an uneven appearance, enlarged pores are also more likely to become clogged, with an increase in oil production. This can subsequently lead to the formation of spots, pimples and blackheads.

Several factors contribute to the development of enlarged pores. Firstly, excessive oil production, or sebum, by the skin’s sebaceous glands can lead to clogged pores. When sebum mixes with dead skin cells and other debris, it can create blockages within the follicles. Additionally, as we age, the skin’s elasticity decreases, causing the pores to appear larger. Sun damage is another significant factor. Overexposure to UV radiation can break down collagen and elastin fibres in the skin, making the pores appear more pronounced.

Genetics can also play a role as some individuals are genetically predisposed to having larger pores. Finally, improper skincare practices, such as using harsh or drying cleansers, can exacerbate the issue. Additionally, squeezing or picking at blemishes can lead to inflammation and further stretching of the pores.

While enlarged pores are a common cosmetic concern, various skincare treatments can help to manage their appearance. Consistent sun protection and a balanced skincare routine are crucial in maintaining healthy, refined-looking skin. Additionally, in-clinic treatments that improve the firmness and elasticity of the skin can help to significantly reduce pore size. These include: SkinPen microneedling, Forma and skin boosters such as Profhilo and HarmonyCA.
