What is Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

Lymphatic drainage massage (or manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a gentle and non-invasive way of helping the body to clear the lymphatic system, which can become compromised due to a variety of reasons, such as illness, recovery from surgery and certain lifestyle choices. Lymphedema happens when your tissues retains fluid, after your cardiovascular system sends blood to your tissues and organs. This fluid is called lymph and when something disrupts your lymphatic system and stops it from draining this fluid, it can collect in your arms and legs, causing them to swell and feel uncomfortable.

MLD is a very gentle, sweeping massage technique which helps to remove the lymph from your tissues to your lymph nodes. This then allows for the fluid to be drained naturally and reduces the swelling within your tissues.

What are the benefits of Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

The practice of lymphatic drainage leads to many health benefits, they can include:

An MLD treatment happens in 2 steps:

1. Clearing – this technique releases the lymphatic fluid from your tissues
2. Reabsorption – this technique helps to move the lymphatic fluid to your lymph nodes

Some patients benefit from a mechanical process of MLD. This consists of a sleeve on the affected limb. This sleeve is attached to a pneumatic pump which pulsates, helping the lymph to drain from your tissues and to your lymph nodes.

Generally speaking, MLD is a safe and gentle treatment. However, before we agree to offer this treatment, here at Bank Medispa, we will ask that you attend a no obligation consultation and medical assessment. As with any non-invasive treatment, there can be contraindications which may prevent or restrict an MLD treatment from going ahead. These include the following:

Kidney failure
Blood clots
Heart conditions
Infection anywhere within the body

Very few patients experience negative effects, following MLD. However, some people can experience headaches, nausea and fatigue. If this does occur, speak with your Bank Medispa MLD practitioner about how to manage these side-effects.
