What is Gua Sha massage?

Gua Sha massage therapy involves the use of massage oil and a flat jade or rose quartz stone to scrape across the skin in a downward motion, using long or short movements. This unique action helps to stimulate the microcirculation of soft tissue, increasing blood flow, aiding lymphatic drainage, reduce tension and pain as well as reducing puffiness of the face. Gua Sha is thought to address stagnant energy in the face and body. This energy is called Chi and if not broken down regularly can cause inflammation. Inflammation is the underlying cause of many chronic pain-related conditions. Using the Gua Sha technique on the skin, is thought to break up the Chi, reducing inflammation and promote healing.

Which areas can Gua Sha be performed?

Gua Sha can be used on various areas of a person’s body, and these include the back, neck, arms, buttocks and legs. The facial version of Gua Sha tends to be a gentler version where your practitioner will apply a mild pressure, gradually increasing it to an intensity to which you are able to tolerate. This toleration may need to be built up over several sessions, as Gua Sha is intended to be a comfortable and pleasant experience.

Am I suitable for Gua Sha massage at Bank Medispa?

Gua Sha massage is a non-surgical and non-invasive therapy, which means that most people can benefit from the treatment. How many treatments will I need?

Gua Sha is a treatment which you can undergo regularly. Results can be seen in as little as one treatment, but to optimise your outcomes, your practitioner may suggest a course of several treatments. You may also need regular maintenance sessions to offer long term benefits.
